MOUNTAINEERING - ICONIC 4000
Gran Paradiso (4061 m)
Two days in Gran Paradiso National Park, with an overnight stay in an alpine mountain hut, a glacier ascent and an iconic rocky finish above 4,000 m.
The experience
Climb Gran Paradiso, a classic 4,000-metre peak in the heart of Italy’s oldest national park, where mountain trails lead to glaciers and a rocky summit overlooking the Alps. The ascent combines roped glacier travel with a short rocky section leading to the summit.
An overnight stay in a traditional mountain hut is part of the experience, offering time to settle into the rhythm of the mountains and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding peaks. Before dawn, we set out across rocky terrain and snow-covered slopes, with views opening up as we climb towards the summit.
Level & requirements
Requirements
Good fitness and experience with long mountain hikes. No severe fear of heights.
Level Guide
Each experience has a technical level, indicating the skills required, and a physical level, indicating the fitness and effort involved. Actual difficulty may vary depending on mountain conditions, weather, and the group.
Technical Level
Level 1 — Beginner
No previous mountaineering experience is required, but some experience of mountain hiking is necessary. Suitable for your first alpine ascent, on relatively easy snow, glacier or rocky terrain.
Level 2 — Basic
No previous mountaineering experience is required, but a good level of mountain hiking experience is essential. You should be comfortable on steep, uneven terrain. Routes may involve steeper snow slopes, easy scrambling, exposed sections and more demanding glacier travel.
Level 3 — Intermediate
Previous mountaineering experience is required. Routes may involve sustained snow or ice slopes, exposed ridges, mixed terrain and moderate rock climbing. You should be confident with crampons and using an ice axe.
Level 4 — Advanced
Solid mountaineering experience is essential. Routes involve sustained technical climbing on rock, snow, ice or mixed terrain, often with significant exposure. Good movement skills and confidence in challenging alpine conditions are required.
Level 5 — Expert
Extensive experience on technical alpine routes is required. Climbs may involve steep ice, difficult mixed terrain, sustained rock climbing and highly exposed sections. Strong technical skills, efficiency and experience in demanding mountain environments are essential.
Physical Level
Physical levels for aerobic mountain activities are based on expected activity time, elevation gain and overall sustained effort. Altitude, terrain, weather, pace and backpack weight can increase the physical demands.
Level 1 — Easy
Gentle outings and short ascents up to around 5 hours of activity, usually with less than 600 m of elevation gain.
Level 2 — Easy to Moderate
Around 5–7 hours of activity or 600–1,000 m of elevation gain.
Level 3 — Moderate
Around 7–9 hours of activity or 1,000–1,500 m of elevation gain.
Level 4 — Demanding
Around 9–12 hours of activity or 1,500–2,000 m of elevation gain.
Level 5 — Very Demanding
More than 12 hours of activity or more than 2,000 m of elevation gain.
Practical information
Program
Two days in Gran Paradiso National Park with an ascent to 4,061 m.
Day 1: Approach to the Mountain Hut
We will meet directly at the mountain hut around 5:00–5:30 PM. Depending on conditions and availability, we will choose either Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II (2,730 m) or Rifugio Federico Chabod (2,710 m).
The walk to either hut follows easy, well-marked mountain trails that can be completed independently. If you prefer to be guided during the approach to the hut, this can be arranged for an additional €150 for the whole group. It is recommended walking up to the hut in the morning so you can rest in the afternoon (rooms are available from early afternoon). Each hut offers a different route to the summit of Gran Paradiso.
Walking time: around 2–3 hours.
Elevation gain: approximately +780 m to Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II or +880 m to Rifugio Chabod.
Before dinner, we will check the equipment and have a briefing about the following day’s ascent. Dinner and overnight stay at the mountain hut.
Day 2: Ascent of Gran Paradiso
After an early breakfast, around 3:00–4:00 AM, we will leave the mountain hut before dawn and begin our ascent over rocky terrain towards the glacier. Roped together, we will climb gradually towards the upper slopes of Gran Paradiso. A short, exposed rocky section will lead us to the summit at 4,061 m, with views across the surrounding Alps. We will then descend to the same mountain hut where we spent the night, where the guided excursion ends.
Walking time: around 8–9 hours, including the ascent (around 4–5 hours) and the descent to the mountain hut.
Elevation gain: approximately +1,330 m from Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II or +1,350 m from Rifugio Chabod.
The descent from the mountain hut to the valley is always completed independently. The full descent from the summit of Gran Paradiso to the car park involves around 2,200 m of elevation loss. For those who have never completed such a long descent, it is recommended to spend an additional night at the mountain hut independently, then walk down to the car park in the valley the following day.
All times are approximate and depend on conditions and group pace.
