MOUNTAINEERING - MY FIRST 4000
Piramide Vincent
Two days on Monte Rosa to discover glacier mountaineering, learn the basics and enjoy your first 4,000-metre summit.
The experience
Reaching your first 4,000-metre summit is a special milestone. The Piramide Vincent (4,215 m), in the Monte Rosa massif, offers a perfect introduction to high-altitude mountaineering, surrounded by spectacular glaciers and some of the highest peaks in the Alps.
Over two days, we'll discover the basics of glacier travel, get familiar with mountaineering equipment and enjoy a night in a high-altitude mountain hut before heading for the summit. A private experience adapted to your pace, with time to learn and enjoy the mountains.
Level & requirements
Requirements
No previous mountaineering experience required. Good physical fitness and some mountain hiking experience are essential.
Level Guide
Each experience is rated separately for technical difficulty and physical effort. These levels describe the experience and fitness generally required from participants. The route grade, when provided, describes the difficulty of a specific climb. Actual difficulty can vary with the route, climbing style, conditions and group.
Technical Level
Level 1 — Beginner
No previous mountaineering experience is required. Suitable for your first alpine ascent, on relatively easy snow, glacier or rocky terrain.
Level 2 — Basic
Some previous mountaineering experience is recommended. Routes may involve steeper snow slopes, easy scrambling, exposed sections and more demanding glacier travel. Basic familiarity with crampons and ice axe is useful.
Level 3 — Intermediate
Previous mountaineering experience is required. Routes may involve sustained snow or ice slopes, exposed ridges, mixed terrain and moderate rock climbing. You should be confident moving with crampons and using an ice axe.
Level 4 — Advanced
Solid mountaineering experience is essential. Routes involve sustained technical climbing on rock, snow, ice or mixed terrain, often with significant exposure. Good movement skills and confidence in challenging alpine conditions are required.
Level 5 — Expert
Extensive experience on technical alpine routes is required. Climbs may involve steep ice, difficult mixed terrain, sustained rock climbing and highly exposed sections. Strong technical skills, efficiency and experience in demanding mountain environments are essential.
Physical Level
Physical levels are based on the duration, elevation gain and overall effort required. Altitude, terrain, weather conditions and the weight of your backpack can significantly increase the physical demands of an ascent.
Level 1 — Easy
1–3 hours of activity, little elevation gain (100-300 meters). No specific fitness training needed.
Level 2 — Easy to Moderate
3–4 hours of activity, up to 600 m of elevation gain.
Level 3 — Moderate
4–6 hours of activity, up to 1,000 m of elevation gain.
Level 4 — Demanding
6–9 hours of activity, up to 1,300 meters or more of elevation gain.
Level 5 — Very Demanding
9–12 hours or a multi-day outing, with prolonged effort and substantial elevation gain.
Practical information
Program
Two days on Monte Rosa, with a night in a mountain hut and a summit at 4,215 m.
Day 1: Approach to the Mountain Hut
We will meet at 1:30 PM at the Wunderbar in Staffal, Gressoney, have a coffee and check our equipment before taking the lifts to Punta Indren (3,275 m). From there, we will walk to Rifugio Città di Mantova (3,498 m), approximately 1 hour away, with around 220 m of elevation gain. Depending on availability and conditions, we may continue to Capanna Gnifetti (3,647 m), approximately 1.5 hours from Punta Indren, with around 370 m of elevation gain from the upper lift station.
In the afternoon, we will get familiar with crampons, ice axe and rope techniques, and practise the basics of glacier travel where conditions allow.
Dinner and overnight stay at the mountain hut.
Day 2: Ascent of Pyramid Vincent
We will leave the hut early, between 3:30 and 5:00 AM, depending on conditions, and begin the ascent across the glaciers of Monte Rosa.
Progressing roped together, we will gradually gain altitude towards Colle Vincent before climbing the final snowy slopes to the summit.
From the top, we will enjoy views of the surrounding 4,000-metre peaks and across the Alps. We will then descend along the same route, return to Punta Indren and take the lifts back to Staffal.
Elevation gain from the hut:
• Rifugio Mantova: approximately +720 m.
• Capanna Gnifetti: approximately +570 m.
The summit ascent normally takes around 3–4 hours from Rifugio Mantova, depending on conditions and group pace.
